One of the most iconic mining districts was Park City, nestled in the Wasatch Mountains. Copper King: Bingham Canyon Mine

Utah’s mining history is closely tied to the colossal Bingham Canyon Mine, located southwest of Salt Lake City. Often referred to as the “Richest Hole on Earth,” the Bingham Canyon Mine has been a significant copper producer since its discovery in 1848. Today, it is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world.

The Bingham Canyon Mine has undergone continuous expansion and technological advancements over the years. Today, Bingham Canyon Mine is owned and operated by Rio Tinto. The extraction methods have evolved from hand tools and horse-drawn carts to massive trucks and modern mining machinery. Copper, gold, silver, tellurium, and other valuable minerals continue to be extracted from this immense pit. Today, copper is extracted, smelted, and refined on-site, contributing to Utah’s economy and providing employment opportunities for thousands of people.

The Birth of the Uranium Industry

Utah’s mining industry experienced another transformative phase with the discovery of uranium during the early 20th century. The demand for uranium skyrocketed during World War II and the Cold War era, primarily due to its use in nuclear power and weapons. Utah became a major player in the uranium market, with several mines opening in the region.

The most prominent uranium mining district in Utah was the Colorado Plateau, spanning parts of southeastern Utah and neighboring states. The legacy of Utah’s uranium industry continues to shape the region’s landscape, both environmentally and economically.

Today, Energy Fuels Resources operates the only uranium mill in the United States near Blanding, Utah. Due to its environmental and safety regulations, this mill is not only processing uranium, but other rare earths and critical minerals from across the U.S.
