The Honorable Gary R. Herbert
State of Utah
350 North State Street, Suite 200
Salt Lake City, Utah 84114-2220
Dear Governor Herbert,
We applaud your prioritization of career and technical education during the 2018 legislative session. We support your goal to “emphasize the value of technical education in the growth and diversification of our state economy.” As a broad coalition of business associations, we write today to express our support for and commitment to making “2018 the Year of Technical Education.”
As leaders of industry, we know a focus on career and technical education (CTE) and improving our workforce are essential to sustain Utah’s booming economy. We stand united in our support of you, the Legislature, and education leaders in efforts to strengthen CTE in Utah.
We know that the business community must do its part as well. To that end, industry commits to proactively support your focus on CTE by:
• Highlighting CTE careers, challenging the idea that these are inferior career options.
• Engaging with CTE students directly to provide a more authentic and appreciable understanding
of careers that can result from CTE pathways.
• Providing endorsement and recognition of career and technical education programs from industry.
At this time of low unemployment and strong economic growth, businesses too often find it difficult to fill jobs critical to their long-term prosperity. This shortfall of qualified talent will prevent Utah from fulfilling its economic potential, hurting businesses and families alike. Now is the time to act to strengthen Utah’s workforce by supporting career and technical education and we stand ready to assist you in this effort.
