Congratulations to the 2022 UMA Safety Awards recipients! UMA is proud to continue our annual safety awards program for both mining and service companies.
The Innovation in Safety Award recognizes and honors practices that have been developed creatively by a UMA member company in response to either general safety or a specific safety concern on the job site. Utah Mining Association was proud to present the award to Simplot Vernal Mine for its Mine Driver Safety System. To address driver fatigue, Simplot partnered with Wheeler Equipment and Intermountain Mining Technology (IMT) to install a Driver Safety System (DSS) on each haul truck. The new system resulted in over a 90% reduction in fatigue events in the first couple of months. The system has been in place for two years and has continued to keep fatigue events at a much lower level.
