Earth Science Curriculum Lesson Plans - Grades 7, 8 & 9

The Utah Mining Association (UMA), partnering with University of Utah mining engineering students, developed lesson plans to help teach the middle school earth science curriculum using mining industry examples and real world applications. Teachers in the Alpine School District piloted and refined the lesson plans during the 2013-2014 school year. UMA is proud to offer these free lesson plans targeting specific earth science curriculum standards and objectives for grades 7, 8 and 9. Click here for earth science curriculum web page.

An Exciting New Tool in Our Education Initiative. . .

Since 1915, the Utah Mining Association’s voice and mission has been to promote and encourage education in mining and minerals to further the understanding of the role this critical industry and its products play in people’s lives, and to foster a spirit of community cooperation.

Mining supports the very foundation of our economy. From the stone and gravel used to build roads and lay foundations for homes and buildings, to coal and uranium used to generate more than half of the nation’s electricity, to the copper wire that connects billions of computers to a global social and commercial network, our economy and way of life depend on the vital resources provided by mining.

As part of our goal to make good, quality materials available to teachers, parents that home school, and others that may be looking for educational curriculum pertaining to mining and minerals, we have developed the Mining Rocks! website.

Everything on the website is available for downloads and reproductions. Click on www.miningrocks.net.

The Hermes Creative Award was presented to the Mining Focus Magazine and Mining Rocks! website as a joint campaign for creativity and editorial excellence in an educational initiative. A platinum award was received, which is the highest award given.
